eBookies.com: Boxing

Boxing uses a money line, and also utilizes over/unders. So you may see a fight listed like this, as it was at BetUS.com:

ROY JONES JR. -350
FELIX TRINIDAD +280

UNDER 11.5 ROUNDS -155
OVER 11.5 ROUNDS +115

The way you read it is like this: if you wanted Jones, you would have laid $350 for every $100 you're hoping to win. Reducing that down to the lowest number as expressed as a fraction, that means you lay 7/2 with him. A winning Trinidad wager would have brought $280 for every $100 wagered, giving him a potential 28/10 return, or 14/5. As far as the over/under is concerned, it's pretty straightforward - if the fight went OVER 11.5 rounds, which means past the 1:30 mark of the 12th round (which it did), you received $115 for every dollar wagered. A bet on the UNDER meant the fight had to end before the 1:30 mark of the 12th.

Remember that when the oddsmaker puts up a line for boxing, it's no different in some ways than when he puts up lines on football, basketball or baseball. An important consideration is something called "public perception." Basically, the oddsmaker is more or less anticipating that there is going to be some money bet on one side or the other. And as a result, when the line is put up initially, he may have a tendency to overcompensate one way or the other.

This can happen for a couple of reasons - one is that there is a fighter whose name is in the public domain, easily recognizable, in a big fight, and the general public is going to bet with its heart and not its head. A famous case in point involved the Ali-Holmes fight. Ali was on a comeback, having beaten Leon Spinks in his last fight two years before. Holmes was a tremendous champion, but he was not necessarily a POPULAR champion. That distinction belonged to Ali. With the pre-fight hype, and reports that Ali had gotten down below 220 pounds, public sentiment drove the line to where it was almost an even proposition. Of course, Ali did almost nothing in the fight, and Holmes, a fighter who had been much busier, and a much better fighter than most people wanted to give him credit for, pounded out an easy TKO.

Sometimes a fighter might be perfectly capable, but largely unknown to the betting public. This actually happens quite a bit more than it used to, with the emergence of the online sportsbooks and the availability of more betting options on fights than in the past. In cases where the "unknown" is facing the more established name, it obviously behooves one to have as much information at his/her disposal as possible.

There can be a substantial difference between perception and reality; "perception" being the public perception, and "reality" being what you think is most likely to happen.

The question is, can you take advantage of it?

Hopefully, we can help you do that at eBookies, with advice and regular updates on upcoming fights. Stick with us and get an edge!
